Litter box supplies
I can’t stress enough how important a clean litter box is. Unfortunately, people often overlook this step.
Cats deserve a clean bathroom just like you. The cat’s nose is 10+x stronger than ours.
The right litter box supplies will help decrease:
- Behavioral issues
- Health issues
- Litter aversion
I spend 5 mins/week on litter maintenance.
It’s really easy to keep it clean and odor-free. Without using heavily scented nasty litter that your cat hates.
1. Stainless steel box
Ditch the plastic litter box. Plastic traps bacteria.
With a plastic box you have:
- More odor
- Difficult cleaning
- More money replacing it every year
- Waste on the environment
- More stank if you don’t replace it regularly
A stainless steel box is:
- More sanitary
- Easier to clean
- Less stank
- One-time investment
Buy a stainless steel box.
2. Double-layer litter mat
Let’s face it: every type of litter tracks. A double-layer litter mat helps keep the litter area clean.
A mesh-looking mat is:
- Small in size
- Difficult to clean out all litter pieces
- Stinky over time since you can’t clean it properly
A double-layer litter mat is:
- Large in size
- Easy to clean between the layers
- More sanitary since you can clean it
Buy a double-layer litter mat.
3. Walnut litter
I’ve tried 11 types of litter and heavily researched 4 others. So far walnut is the only eco-friendly litter that’s worth it.
Other litters:
- Corn, wheat, and cassava (anything starch-based) may form deadly mold
- Clay and crystal litter is not safe to breathe or ingest
- Breathing in wood dust can cause cancer
- Hemp doesn’t trap the stank or clump
- Grass seed litter may come with dead bugs (this happened to me with 3 different brands)
- Coconut litter is too dusty (I wanted to love this one)
Walnut litter is:
- Made with walnut shells and plant-based clumping agents
- Not too dusty
- Small granules
- Odor-blocked with enzymes
- Scent-free (available)
Buy walnut cat litter.
4. Metal scoop
Again, ditch the plastic.
A plastic scoop:
- Traps bacteria which means more stank
- Is difficult to clean properly
- Needs to be replaced regularly
A metal scoop is:
- More sanitary
- Easier to clean
- A one-time investment
Buy a metal litter scoop.
5. Stainless steel garbage (DIY litter genie)
The litter genie is a great product, in theory. Unfortunately, it’s made out of plastic.
We need to ditch plastic.
Buy a small stainless steel garbage.
6. Dog waste bags
Dog waste bags are great for DIY litter genies. If you use the stainless steel garbage above, check the size of the bags before purchasing them.
My DIY litter genie is a gallon glass jug. Doggie waste bags fit perfectly.
You can buy some doggie waste bags on Amazon or your local pet store.
Or you could reuse shopping bags from the grocery store.
I’ve tested plant-based garbage bags, and they don’t work.
Unfortunately plastic works better. But the real litter genie’s bags are plastic anyway.
7. Refined Feline litter enclosure
Most cats like open spaces when they do their business. This makes them feel safe because they can see their surroundings.
But if you must hide the litter box, try a litter enclosure.
Refined Feline makes a spacious enclosure with a storage drawer.
Buy a modern litter enclosure (US only).
Tip: Check out my other recommendations for litter enclosures for different aesthetics.
8. Door Buddy
Maybe you can’t afford a litter enclosure right now. But you want to keep your dogs or babies out of the litter box.
The Door Buddy is a great solution for this.
It’s an adjustable door strap and latch that you put on the door. The door will stay open only enough for your cat to go into the litter room.
This is much easier than installing a door flap. Especially if you don’t own your home.
Buy the Door Buddy.
9. Urine test strips
Cats won’t tell us when something is off. So their bathroom habits are a great indicator of health.
I use these urine strips for preventative care.
It’s much easier to prevent health issues if you catch early signs. Managing a problem when it’s too late is much more difficult.
Buy urine test strips.
10. Urine odor remover
I don’t have any accident problems with my cat, Jericho.
He uses the box regularly.
Pssst.. It’s because I scoop as he goes and clean the box completely once a week.
But, if you have issues with litter aversion or markings, check out this urine odor remover.
It’s made with natural ingredients that won’t harm your cats, dogs, or children.
Buy natural urine odor remover (US, CA).
Cat furniture
Cats need proper enrichment to stay sane indoors. The right furniture will provide plenty of enrichment.
Get cat furniture that satisfies multiple enrichment needs.
Enrichment includes:
- Climbing up high
- Scratching
- Hiding
- Resting
- Window-watching and relaxing in the sun
This enrichment keeps cats active, prevents boredom, and provides mental stimulation.
11. Refined Feline Lotus tower
Refined Feline Lotus tower is one of the best furniture pieces on Amazon.
Others on Amazon:
- Are cheapy made
- Smell funny
Refined Feline lotus tower is:
- Durable and made to last
- Tested at animal shelters
- High with multiple levels, resting perches, and scratching areas
Buy the Refined Feline Lotus tower (US, CA).
Or buy a budget-friendly cat condo.
Better than no condo!
12. Scratching post
All cats have the natural urge to scratch.
Scratching allows cats to:
- Shed dead layers of claws
- Mark their territory
- Stretch
It’s tall, and Jericho loves it.
NOTE: I bought it in 2017. I had to buy new sisal rope twice.
In 2020, I decided to upcycle the scratching post with the Ripple Rug (bottom only) rather than buying more sisal.
In 2021, I bought a new scratching post from CatsPlay (check international shipping).
I include Trixie in this list because we’re talking about Amazon products.
Trixie scratching post is better than no scratching post!
Refined Feline also sells scratchers on Amazon (US, CA).
13. Turboscratcher Pad
Cats also like to scratch cardboard. Cardboard is made of trees. Trees are mother nature’s scratching post.
This is why cats love boxes.
Boom!
The Turboscratcher Pad is plastic (blah) and has a cardboard scratcher in the middle. There’s a ball track around the cardboard.
It’s a toy and a scratcher.
Buy the Turboscratcher Pad.
Tip: If you’d like a more eco-friendly option that’s built to last, check out JML Pets on Etsy.
14. 2-in-1 cave bed
Cats need a comfy place to rest. Even if they sleep in bed with you.
This 2-in-1 cave bed is:
- Machine-washable
- Soft and cozy
- Doubles as an enclosed and open bed
Buy the 2-in-1 cat cave bed.
Tip: If you want a more eco-friendly option, check out the organic cotton bed from Purrfect Play on Etsy.
15. Window perch
The window serves endless entertainment to our feline friends. Even if your view stinks, your cat will enjoy window-watching.
Get a perch that’s stable and durable.
If your cat isn’t comfortable using it, he won’t use it.
This window perch comes with:
- Stable legs to put up against the wall
- Strong adhesive that attaches to your windowsill
- Memory foam and soft, washable cover
My friends and clients have tried the suction cup hammock style perches. Their cats didn’t use it.
Buy this window perch instead.
Tip: Rest the ledge on a cat condo platform for added security and stability.
Interactive toys
Playtime is great exercise and mental stimulation for indoor cats. Indoor cats don’t hunt.
Playtime is the indoor version of hunting.
Playtime:
- Prevents boredom and destructive behavior
- Cats prefer human interaction to other stimuli
- Provides exercise and mental stimulation
The best way to get your cat to play is to include yourself!
Tip: Here’s exactly how I get Jericho to play with me every day. Don’t fool yourself. All cats love to play!
16. Cat Dancer
The Cat Dancer is so simple, but all cats love it. It’s made with a thin piece of wire and pieces of cardboard.
Why would you spend money on it?
Because all cats love to play with it.
Buy the Cat Dancer.
Tip: Here are 10 different ways to play with the Cat Dancer.
Give your cat a confident and comfortable life with the digital + printable Cat Care Binder so you can become best buds.
17. RompiCatz (previously Neko Flies)
Wand toys are amazing interactive toys. RompiCatz makes a wand rod and several attachment toys.
This is great because cats get bored easily. Choose from bugs, mice, birds, and other little critters.
These little critters are natural prey. Your cat will go crazy hunting for them.
Buy the RompiCatz wands (US only).
Or buy other wand options.
18. Rainbow wand
Rainbow ribbon wands are another hit. Some cats hunt snakes.
The simple ribbon mimics a snake perfectly.
Buy the rainbow wand.
19. Mice
Mice are another natural prey of cats. These mice are made out of recycled bottles.
Hide these around your home and get your cat to hunt.
They’re the perfect size for batting around.
Buy fun mice.
20. Ripple Rug
The Ripple Rug is by far the best cat activity center. It’s versatile, easy to clean, and really fun.
Jericho plays on the Ripple Rug daily.
The Ripple Rug is:
- Made with recycled plastic bottles
- Easy to spot clean or throw in the wash (delicate, cold, hang dry)
- Versatile – cats can scratch, hunt, play, rest, and hide
- The best investment you’ll make
Buy the Ripple Rug (US only).
Don’t bother with the knockoffs!
Tip: Check out my puzzle rugs for cats guide to see why you’ll both love it.
Food supplies
We are what we eat. Cats need proper food and the right supplies to get the best nutrition.
Most commercial cat food (kibble and wet):
- Is highly processed cereal
- Provides very little animal protein
- Contains dangerous mystery ingredients
- Isn’t species-appropriate
You’d be shocked to learn what’s inside your cat’s food.
Tip: Check out cat food facts for everything you need to know about cat food.
21. Sanitary food dishes (non plastic)
Sanitary food dishes include stainless steel, glass, and lead-free ceramic.
Plastic traps bacteria. Even with regular washing.
This can cause chin acne and food contamination.
The raised stand we have comes with 2 stainless steel bowls and a plate.
Super convenient since we need to ditch plastic, right?
Buy the raised food stand and dish combo (Us only. Choose small size for cats).
If you prefer a more modern look, check out Tuft + Paw.
22. Food mat
A food mat also makes cleanup easier.
The food-grade silicone food mat that we have fits the raised stand mentioned above perfectly.
Buy a food mat.
23. Can covers
If you feed wet food, these can covers come in handy.
Cats prefer (and deserve) fresh food. The food covers will help keep wet food fresh.
Wet food isn’t fresh to begin with. But wet food is definitely better than kibble.
So, if you absolutely have to feed it, buy these can covers.
24. Ice cube trays for raw
Raw diet!!! It’s the best. Seriously.
Anyway, ice cube trays come in handy if you feed raw.
Buy food-grade silicone ice cube trays.
25. Meat grinder
I buy preground meat, bones, and organs. But if you prefer to grind the meat yourself, check out this meat grinder.
Note: Most grinders are not equipped for bones. You’ll need a commercial-grade heavy-duty grinder for bones.
Buy a meat grinder.
And you can buy freeze-dried ground rabbit bone from Hare Today (US only).
26. Feeder mice
Treat-release toys are great for mental stimulation. We should make our cats work for their food.
Unfortunately, most of these toys are made out of plastic.
Wash these regularly.
Buy the feeder mice for fun hunting.
27. Snuffle mat
Here’s another fun activity center.
The snuffle mat activity center is marketed toward dogs. But cats will enjoy the snuffle mat too.
Remember, cats are natural-born hunters.
Make your cat hunt for his treats!
Buy the snuffle mat.
28. Organic cat grass
Cats graze on grass occasionally. Grass provides insoluble fiber and may help your cat pass things along.
Make sure your cat grass is organic.
Cats may puke up the grass if they have too much. Put it in a closed room and use it as a treat.
Buy organic cat grass.
29. Healthy treats
Most cat treats on Amazon are made with cheap, poor-quality ingredients. These treats do more harm than good.
Don’t be fooled by the “dental health” marketing claim.
Check out my cat treat guide for more info.
Healthy treats are made with:
- One ingredient: meat
- Human-grade ingredients
- No carbs, fillers, or deadly dyes
Buy healthy treats:
30. The Honest Kitchen
Perhaps you’re not ready for a raw diet. You should reconsider it.
Until then at least feed your cat human-grade food.
Most commercial cat foods contain ingredients not fit for human consumption. And not fit for the carnivore cat living in your home.
I cover this in my kibble guide, wet food guide, and cat treats guide. Too much info to cover it all here.
The Honest Kitchen is:
- Made with human-grade ingredients
- Better quality food for your cat
- Dehydrated, lightly cooked food
- Rehydrate with water and serve (similar to wet food consistency)
Buy The Honest Kitchen (US, CA).
Note: THK is still very high in carbs for cats. However, many cat foods have carbs unless you feed raw. At least THK is better quality ingredients.
Check out cat food reviews for more options.
31. Ziwi Peak Air-Dried
If you somehow still believe the myth that kibble cleans teeth (lol), this food is for you.
Seriously, though, if I told you that I don’t brush my teeth because crunchy granola cleans my teeth… What would you say to me?
Anyway, if you have to feed crunchy food, at least feed better quality food.
Ziwi Peak Air-Dried food includes:
- Whole ingredients
- Meat-only protein
- No fillers, carbs, or crap
Buy Ziwi Peak Air-Dried food instead of more kibble.
Tip: Have you checked out my kibble guide yet?
32. Feline Natural freeze-dried raw
Maybe you want to feed raw, but you’re not ready to prepare it yourself.
I got you.
Primal freeze-dried nuggets:
- Have much more meat-protein than kibble and wet
- Produce provides vitamins and minerals instead of synthetic versions
- Are a great transition to raw for you and your cats
My mom feeds Feline Natural to her 4 cats. They all love it. And they used to eat kibble.
If they can do it, so can yours!
Buy Feline Natural freeze-dried nuggets (US, CA).
Check out freeze dried raw cat food reviews for more options.
Grooming supplies
Did you know that cats spend 30-40% of their day grooming? Whew!
Help out your cats with proper grooming supplies.
Tip: Ease into grooming. Make it a fun routine and take your time. Offer lots of healthy treats and praise for cooperation.
If your cat has had enough, then you’re done for the day.
33. Slicker brush
I like this brush the best because it’s easy to use.
Jericho hated brushing for a while. But now he loves it.
I’ve also tried the love glove. My clients liked it more than Jericho.
Buy the slicker brush.
Tip: Start slow, make brushing a routine, and your cat will expect it.
34. Claw clippers
Please don’t use human nail clippers on your cat. You’ll splinter his nail and cause serious pain.
Only use claw clippers designed for cats. Watch my video on how to trim a cat’s claws.
Buy a cat claw clipper.
Note: I am not talking about declawing. Only trimming the pointy ends.
35. Self-groomer brush
Cats rub on things to mark their territory, and it feels good.
These self-groomer brushes are fun. We have 2 on the corners of the hallway wall.
They are plastic (blah), but Jericho does use them.
Buy the self-groomer brushes.
36. Pet dental spray
Most cat toothpaste has nasty ingredients. You can read more in my healthy cat teeth guide.
Too much to go into here.
Natural dental sprays are made with good-quality ingredients.
Buy pet dental spray (US, CA).
37. Ear cleaner
This ear cleaner is made by the same company as the pet dental spray above.
It’s made with natural ingredients that will help clean your cat’s ears.
Buy natural ear cleaner (US only).
Travel
Cats prefer to stick to their territory. But, if you have to travel, or your guys enjoy traveling, get the right gear.
The right gear will keep your travels safe and stress-free.
Tip: Check out my cat travel guide before you travel with cats.
38. Harness and leash
Use a harness and leash to keep your cat safe. Even if you have a carrier.
Cats are mischievous. If cats want to get out, they’ll find a way out.
Don’t forget to train your cat on how to use it before you travel. Start training in your home first.
Your cat will probably flop over and forget “how to cat”. Jericho did.
Buy the bungee harness and leash.
39. Carrier
A comfy carrier is a must. Ditch those 1950s hard-plastic carriers. Seriously, it’s like a jail cell in there.
Use a soft-case carrier that has mesh airflow and a comfy bottom instead.
We have this backpack that is super sturdy, has lots of pockets, and mesh throughout for air flow.
Buy Your Cat Backpack.
40. Pet travel bag
You’ll also need a travel bag for your cats.
This travel bag has:
- A zipper mesh pocket inside
- Mesh pockets throughout
- Collapsible food and water bowls
- 2 extra insulated bags
It’s like a suitcase for your cat!
Buy the pet travel bag for your cat’s stuff.
41. Emergency kit
Emergency kits are a must-have for travel. It’s a must-have even when you don’t travel.
Better safe than sorry, right?
This emergency kit has:
- 40 pieces total
- Cotton swabs and gauze pads
- Bandages, tape, and wraps
- A claw clipper and tick trap
- Disinfectant pads
Buy the emergency kit for travel and your home.
42. Pet first aid book
This book is geared toward kids. So, don’t worry, you’ll be able to understand it!
It includes basic steps with detailed photos.
The 36-page book covers:
- Choking
- Allergic reactions and bee stings
- Rescue breathing and CPR
- Bleeding
- Fractures
- Heatstroke
- Frostbites
- Poisoning
- Seizures and shock
- Upset tummy
Buy the pet first aid book to keep your cats safe (US only).
43. Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth
I use food-grade diatomaceous earth around my apartment to kill roaches. They don’t pay rent, so…
Diatomaceous Earth kills all bugs as long as it stays dry. This will come in handy when you travel.
Always buy food-grade DE. Pool-grade exists as well, but it’s not safe for us and pets.
Buy food-grade diatomaceous earth.
