Healthy skin & coat fat bomb topper recipe for cats:

This topper recipe for cats is a treat and topper that you can feed occasionally. It is not a complete and balanced meal on its own.

I’ve included product links within the ingredients list below of what I use and recommend.

  • 1 can sardines packed in water, no salt added
  • 1 can oysters, packed in water, no salt added (if you can find it)* or packed in olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unflavored collagen
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

The canned sardines I use are 4.4 ounces (including the water), and the oysters are 3 ounces (including the olive oil). But you can use whatever size cans you can find.

If you use the same size cans as I do, this recipe will make approximately 22 servings (1 teaspoon per serving).

*I cannot find canned oysters in water with no salt added. So I use the oysters canned in olive oil.

I do my best to drain the oil from the oysters. But I’m not overly concerned about a little bit going into the topper recipe.

Nutritional benefits of this topper recipe for cats

The ingredients in this topper recipe are high in nutrients that benefit your cat’s skin and coat.

This is a great topper to boost kibble, upgrade wet food, or a nice topper to a balanced raw or whole prey diet.

  • Sardines are high in omega fatty acids and vitamin D which can help relieve allergies and inflamed skin
  • Oysters are high in zinc which helps your cat maintain a healthy coat and skin
  • Collagen peptides support skin health and can reduce pain and inflammation
  • Coconut oil may have antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help heal the skin

All of these ingredients are safe for cats in small amounts. I talk about how much to feed below.

How to make this simple topper recipe for cats

  • Drain the canned sardines and oysters.
  • Add all ingredients to a bowl, food processor, or blender and mix all ingredients together.
  • Use a tablespoon to portion servings into a treat and topper mold. Store any portions you will not use within 48 hours in freezer-safe containers and put in the freezer until you need it.
  • Thaw food in the refrigerator ~24 hours before you need it. If you need to thaw food quickly, put the sealed container of food in a larger dish full of cold water. Do not thaw food at room temperature on the counter. Do not use a microwave.
  • Wash your hands, surfaces, and utensils with hot water and soap when cleaning up.

How much of the topper to feed your cat

Always discuss diet changes with your cat’s veterinarian to decide how much is appropriate for your individual cat.

Treats and toppers should not make up more than 10% of your cat’s total daily intake. Remember to remove equal parts of your cat’s current food so that you do not overfeed your cat.

I feed approximately 1 teaspoon of this topper daily. Remember to remove equal parts of your cat’s current food so that you do not overfeed your cat.

You will have to adjust feeding amounts based on your individual cat. See how much to feed your cat for more instructions.

How I formulate cat food & topper recipes

I use Animal Diet Formulator to formulate recipes. However, this one is a bit more advanced and requires a monthly payment.

For beginners who want to formulate recipes, I highly recommend Paws of Prey Cat Meal Formulator. It’s very easy to use, includes a sample recipe, and it’s a one-time payment!
