Easy DIY litter genie
My DIY litter genie is much better than buying the actual product.
The actual litter genie is plastic. Plastic traps bacteria, even with regular washing.
You also need to replace plastic at least once yearly.
Pros for my DIY litter genie
- More sanitary which means less stink
- Easier to clean which means less stink
- Cheaper which is better for your wallet
- Less wasteful and better for the environment
Materials needed
- Mini stainless steel garbage bin on Amazon (US, CA, UK)
- OR a glass jug with a lid
- Reuse plastic bags
- OR buy doggie waste bags on Amazon (US, CA, UK)
That’s it!
Tips for your DIY litter genie
Make sure the jug is wide enough for your litter scoop. Otherwise, you’ll get litter everywhere when you dump the clumps.
The lip on the jug should be small. That way the waste bag comes out easily when it’s full.
If the indent lip is too deep, the full bag of waste won’t come out easily.
Use plastic bags with the DIY litter genie
I’ve tried the plant-based versions of garbage bags. The moisture from the clumps burns holes through the bags.
So you’ll still have to use plastic bags. But the actual litter genie uses plastic bags anyway.
At least the DIY litter genie itself isn’t plastic.
Clean the DIY litter genie once weekly
I dump the waste 1-2 times weekly. And I clean the jug once weekly with hot water and unscented soap.
I use Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap which is on Amazon (US, CA, UK)
