Iāve purchased whole prey from 3 places so far.
The quality of one breeding facility went downhill so I stopped purchasing from them.
Thatās actually one reason I stopped feeding whole prey altogether.
Lots of poops in the bag and a strong urine smell. Super gross.
But Iām back to feeding whole prey and loving it! Now that I found a different whole prey breeding facility with much better quality.

Hare Today whole prey and raw food
Iāve been a paying customer of Hare Today since 2019. I found them when I was searching for rabbit meat for homemade raw diets.
Jericho has had a lot from Hare Today.
- Beef
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Duck
- Lamb
- Salmon
- Rabbit
- Quail (ground and whole prey)
- Mice (ground and whole prey)
- Whole carcass ground guinea pig
- Day old chicks
Hare Today is mainly a raw pet food supplier. They source from local farms and also raise some animals themselves.
But Hare Today also sells whole prey. They source whole prey from Layne Labs and some local farms.
Pros of ordering from Hare Today:
- Decent variety of whole prey
- Large variety of meat, bones, and organs
- Excellent rewards program
- On Susan Thixtonās 2024 list (although human-grade does not apply to whole prey)
- Prey come from a reputable breeding facility are clean and look well cared for
Cons of ordering from Hare Today:
- Minimum 10 pounds to order (although this is standard)
- Not as much whole prey variety as a breeding facility (in age, size, and species)
Layne Labs is a breeding facility in California. You can get more variety in prey age and size if you order straight from them.
But Hare Today is closer to me. So I order from them.
Plus I can get other things from Hare Today like ground salmon and use reward points to save money.
I also love that Hare Today has a rewards program. Sometimes Iām able to get free shipping because of it!
So far Jericho has had their whole prey mice, day old chicks, baby quail, and whole carcass ground guinea pig.
I would love to see more variety in whole prey. But Hare Today has lots of variety otherwise.
I will probably try out the pinkie rabbits the next time I order if they are in stock.
But it is easier to buy whole prey from Cold Blooded Cafe because they offer more variety.
Cold Blooded Cafe whole prey
Iām new to Cold Blooded Cafe, but we have tried multiple products so far.
They posted a coupon code for free shipping on $250+ orders on Instagram. So I figured might as well go for it.
Jericho has had their large and jumbo mice, āsmallā medium rats, and medium hamsters.
So far Iām impressed with the quality. And Jericho likes everything.
Pros of ordering from Cold Blooded Cafe:
- Lots of whole prey variety in size and species
- Pictures of most products on the site (makes me trust them)
- They are specific about what they feed
- No minimum to order
- Flat rate shipping costs regardless of order size
Cons of ordering from Cold Blooded Cafe:
- Flat rate shipping cost regardless of size (only a con if youāre ordering a small amount of products)
Cold Blooded Cafe has many size options for mice, rats, and ASF.
There are three sizes for quail and hamsters. And they also have day old chicks and baby pheasants.
Their rabbits would be too large for cats, even the extra small.
But they still have a lot of variety. Feral cats hunt between 5-7 prey to complete their diet. So variety is key for cats.
Unfortunately, breeding facilities canāt feed a natural diet. The feeders basically eat kibble.
But at least Cold Blooded Cafe tells you the brand they feed.
Other breeding facilities say they feed a āscientifically formulated, species-specific dietā.
Layne Labs states the āscientifically formulatedā diet claim on their website. I haven’t had a bad experience buying whole prey from Hare Today/Layne Labs.
But I still prefer to buy the bulk of my whole prey from a company that is specific about diet.
I also appreciate that Cold Blooded Cafe puts real-life photos of their products on their website. So you know what feeders look like before you purchase.
The pros far outweigh the cons for Cold Blooded Cafe. Iām glad I went big for my first order!
Want to feed whole prey too? The first step is to switch from dry/wet processed food to a premade raw diet.
Yes, whole prey is natural. But your cat probably won’t recognize it as food if he has no fresh food in his diet.
Going from dry to whole prey is like going from addicting chips and candy to fresh filet mignon.
Switching to a premade raw diet first will help your cat get used to fresher ingredients. Check out my Switch to Raw Blueprint to get started!
