These homemade cat treats are made with sardines and an egg. These are our favorite cat treats to use for clicker training!
They are super healthy and very easy to make.
I used to use freeze-dried treats for clicker training. But Jericho always needs more water when he eats anything dry like that. So then I used his raw frozen nuggets. Those are very easy to thaw and break up. But then my hands are all wet and mushy.
These carnivore cookies are higher moisture and easy to break up. But they don’t leave my hands wet and mushy. Plus Jericho loves his sardinies.

Homemade cat treats recipe with sardines:
- 1 can of sardines (approximately 3 ounces)
- 1 egg
That’s it!
I use Wild Planet’s sardines canned in water with no salt added. It has the lowest amount of sodium I’ve been able to find. I can get these at my local grocery store. But they are also available on iHerb and Amazon.
And I use the same chicken eggs that I get from the grocery store.

How to make these cat treats:
- Preheat your oven to 350Β° F
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
- Put sardines in a blender (just the sardines, not the water from the can)
- Crack the egg in and blend it
- Use a 1/2 teaspoon to spoon out little cookie shapes onto the parchment paper
- Bake for 10-15 mins (mine were good at 12 minutes)
My batch makes about 26 cookies. But it depends on how many sardines your can has.
I call them carnivore cookies, but they come out more like a soft cake texture. They will puff up after baking and then flatten out after they cool.

Keep these treats in a sealed container in the refrigerator. I’d say they will last about 5 days. This is fresh food, and there are no preservatives. So just freeze whatever you won’t use up right away. Thaw them in the refrigerator when you need more.
How I use these treats for clicker training
We use Cat School’s clicker training kit for clicker training and absolutely love it!
I break up one cookie into about 10-15 smaller pieces, depending on how big it is. You want to use small pieces of treats when you’re clicker training so that your cat isn’t spending a lot of time chewing. This will keep your cat engaged in the training session.

You can also use these treats as food toppers if you are transitioning to new food. Some people say their cats are not food-motivated for clicker training. And usually this is due to feeding dry food.
Dry food is very calorie-dense, high in carbohydrates, and has flavor enhancers added to it. So many cats become addicted to it and don’t want healthier options.
Use these healthy homemade treats instead of crunchy high carb treats to help your cat get used to eating healthier ingredients. Then you can use these treats as toppers when you switch to high protein low carb wet food or a raw diet.
A high moisture diet is much healthier for cats, and it can help your cat be more open to trying other healthy foods.
