Best brands at local pet food stores for cats

These are the best brands at local pet food stores for your cat. I’ll cover brands that I actually pay for and use. Plus, I have other options just in case those don’t work for you.

We’ll talk about healthy treats, freeze-dried raw, frozen raw, and some of these brands also make gently cooked cat food. These are all healthy options that I recommend as a pet nutritionist.

All of the links to these products plus discounts will be in the post below, just in case you can’t find them locally and want to order online.

Green Juju – Freeze-dried raw treats

green juju freeze dried raw cat treats jess and jericho caticles.com

Jericho has had their freeze-dried raw salmon and rabbit treats. I love these treats because they are single ingredient and made with meat – purrfect for cats.

Green Juju also has complete and balanced freeze-dried and frozen raw food that’s balanced for cats and dogs. I don’t have experience with this though.

Their treats are excellent, and Jericho really loves them. They have a lot of protein variety which is great.

Tip: If you’re currently switching your cat to raw maybe your cat is cautious (not picky!) about the change. All cats are cautious about new food. This is a survival instinct. You’re probably wondering how to convince your cat to eat healthier food. Use freeze-dried treats as a smell attractant.

Take a small piece of the treat and let your cat smell it. Very important for your cat to smell it first! Then crush it on top of your cat’s new food. Test this with a small amount of new food because we want to add new foods gradually to help our cats get used to it slowly. Using the treat as a smell attractant is a great way to get your cat interested and tasting the new food.

I’ve been giving this advice for years because it works! Check out the testimonial below from 2023.

SmallBatch – Freeze-dried raw treats, frozen raw food, gently cooked food

smallbatch freeze dried raw cat treats jess caticles

SmallBatch has a lot of options for cats. This is amazing because we need more options for cats. This is exactly why I started my cats only business 6 years ago.

Jericho has had their freeze-dried blue mussels and pork liver treats. He also ate their frozen raw duck complete food for a few months. The only reason I stopped feeding it is because I’m testing for food allergies and doing a diet reset.

The frozen raw food has whole food ingredients, and they have a lot of protein variety. I also like that they are one-ounce sliders. This makes meal prep very easy.

I was feeding this alongside whole prey. So it was really easy to portion it out. And the sliders thaw much quicker than a one-pound chub of food.

SmallBatch also has meat, bone, and organ 80 10 10 base blends if you want to make your own raw cat food recipe.

You can buy SmallBatch freeze-dried treats and freeze-dried food on Amazon and Chewy if you can’t find them locally.

Quest Cat Food – Freeze-dried & frozen raw food

Jericho eats their frozen raw pork food. I absolutely love that they are frozen raw nuggets. This comes in handy when meal prepping. Whole prey weights vary widely so it’s nice to be able to toss in a few nuggets to make his full day of food.

I like their cat food because they also focus on whole food ingredients. The owner, Steve Brown, has been formulating pet food for decades. He’s also the co-creator of Animal Diet Formulator, the formulator I use for creating recipes that I sell.

Quest doesn’t have as many protein options as SmallBatch. But they do still have a good enough variety to choose from.

Tip: If your local store doesn’t carry these brands, ask if you can order it through them! A local pet food store near me sells healthy raw options, but I didn’t see Quest. So I asked if I could order through them, and they said yes. I actually got a better deal ordering through them vs ordering online.

But if you would like to order Quest online, you can get 25% off with my code JESSCATICLES.

Savage Cat – Frozen raw food

Savage Cat has frozen raw cat food and whole prey quail. I have not tested their food, but it is an option you might find locally.

They’ve been around for a while, and I like that they make food for cats only.

I asked my local pet food store if I could order whole prey quail through them, and they said yes. But it would be more costly than just ordering straight from Savage. So I may call around to other local stores that carry their food to see if I can order quail through them and do a price comparison.

Savage Cat does not use produce in their food. But you will see synthetic supplements. That’s just the way it is when you aren’t using ingredients like oysters, blue mussels, etc.

You can order Savage Cat online if you can’t find it locally.

Raw Dynamic – Freeze-dried treats, air-dried treats, frozen raw food

Jericho has had their freeze-dried raw rabbit treats. He loved them! But I have not tried their frozen raw food. They do have options specifically for cats which is great. But they do include some produce in the food.

That’s where we have to decide – do we prefer whole foods even if there are some produce ingredients or do we prefer no produce but we have to use some synthetic supplements.

You can order Raw Dynamic online if you can’t find it locally.
