How are pets like Pokemon?
Do you have pets in your life? Have you ever played or watched Pokemon? Did you ever notice that pets are like Pokemon?
A lot of Pokemon characters are based on real animals in appearance. Their characteristics match as well.
Here are 19 funny but true ways pets are like Pokemon:
- Loves to eat
- Takes plenty of siestas
- Scatters things often
- Likes to relax
- Likes to fight
- Highly persistent
- Good endurance
- Highly curious
- Mischievous
- Very finicky
- Often lost in thought
- Somewhat stubborn
- Likes to run
- Alert to sounds
- Somewhat of a clown
- Quick to flee
- Follows you around
- Protects you
- They are psychic
1. Loves to eat
Pokemon love to eat, and they will eat almost everything.
Food is used as bait and as a power in the game and TV show.
You can use bait to make Pokemon not run as quickly.
In the TV show, the character Brock makes homemade Pokemon food.
My cat, Jericho, absolutely loves to eat. He tries to eat everything except for peanut butter.
And he is at an ideal weight, not a fatty catty. He’s just a street cat.
Jericho consumes a very healthy raw diet so he loves his food.
His meal is gone within one minute.
I’m just like Brock making my cat food!
2. Takes plenty of siestas
Another Pokemon HP is taking plenty of siestas. This characteristic has been translated as “dozes off” and “nods off”.
So basically it means takes plenty of naps.
Jericho loves his routine nap time. Every lunchtime, I hide treats around my home for Jericho to hunt.
Hunting for treats is great for mental stimulation.
Afterward, we have nap time together. Well, he naps on my lap while I work.
Cats love to nap. Naps are important for recharging energy.
Wild cats take plenty of siestas so they have stored energy for hunting.
Without energy, wild cats would not be able to catch a meal.
3. Scatters things often
This is another Pokemon characteristic.
Cats are notorious for knocking stuff off tables and counters.
Jericho does this all the time when he wants attention.
My mother’s cat steals money from her bag and scatters the bills around the living room.
Cats display boredom by scattering things around.
The noise after knocking something over is entertaining to cats.
When you notice your cat doing this, get out the toys.
If you need guidance on getting your cat to play, here are simple tricks.
4. Likes to relax
Cats are extremely playful, but they also enjoy relaxing.
Again, conserving energy is important because cats need it to hunt.
This is why our indoor cats nap so much.
Even if cats have lived indoors their whole lives, this instinct is ingrained.
Isn’t that interesting?
Indoor domesticated cats act like their wild ancestors solely based on survival skills.
5. Likes to fight
The point of having Pokemon is to battle others.
Each Pokemon has special skills for these battles.
The trainer calls out the moves, and the Pokemon execute.
Mama cat teaches young kittens how to handle stress with play fighting.
Play fighting allows the kittens to feel a safe amount of stress. This teaches them how to handle stress in the future.
Cats show their love with little bites.
My cat, Jericho, plays with us as if we are cats.
He doesn’t mind using his teeth and claws to “play” with us.
Jericho doesn’t go out of his way to hurt us. But he does enjoy instigating “play” time.
6. Highly persistent
Pokemon with this characteristic will stand strong in battle. They have a higher endurance for pain.
Cats are persistent when they want things.
Jericho’s food meows are the definition of persistent.
He cries and cries until we feed him. And he starts meowing an hour or so before his actual mealtime.
Jericho is persistent when he wants attention as well.
He jumps up on our laps, the bed, or our desks and walks around.
He’ll walk on top of us when we are lying down, and he’ll walk all over the keyboard as we type.
Jericho is so desperate that he climbs into the sink hoping for an unexpected treat.
Cats are smart and will continue until they get what they want.
7. Good endurance
This characteristic is for Pokemon that know their limits.
Cats have great endurance, but they are aware of how much energy to use and save.
Jericho is a big zoomies cat. He loves to run around our apartment.
There is drifting as he turns the corner into the hallway.
Then, of course, parkour comes in handy when he’s jumping on top of the counters and cabinets.
However, when he knows it’s time to rest, he plops down on the ground.
Jericho knows his boundaries with playtime.
We need to make sure we pay attention to this as well.
If you notice your cat mouth-breathing, take a break from playtime.
8. Highly curious
Pokemon that are highly curious like to snoop around. Often times they do this without thinking of the consequences.
Cats are insanely curious.
This is because cats want to know their territory inside and out.
Cats are very territorial creatures and like to be in the know at all times. Any surprises could be a threat to survival.
Curious cats will sniff and inspect anything and everything to learn more about their territory.
Unfortunately, cats don’t always think things through.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “curiosity killed the cat”.
9. Mischievous
Mischievous Pokemon like to get into trouble. They prank because it’s fun and gets them noticed.
Adding to curiosity, cats are also mischievous.
To understand the territory, we must test the waters.
Cats will knock things over, open and claw at things, bite, or toss around to get to the bottom of it.
As mentioned above, cats knock things over to get noticed.
A bored cat will get himself into trouble. This is why it’s so important to provide proper enrichment (here are 72 tips for that).
10. Very finicky
Very finicky Pokemon can be difficult to work with when they are not pleased with what’s going on.
They persist to get what they want.
This one is ironic.
Cats love routine yet they become finicky. They may lose interest in food or toys.
This means we need to enrich our cats’ lives in many different ways so they don’t get bored.
Bored cats gain unnecessary weight. Unnecessary weight causes serious health issues.
These health issues require pills, insulin, and/or fluid injections daily.
Please entertain your cat, and keep your cat from being finicky and bored.
11. Often lost in thought
Pokemon often lost in thought ponder the day away. They have a hard time focusing and prefer to wonder.
Cats get lost in thought all day long.
They aren’t necessarily sleeping all day.
Most of the time your cat isn’t fully asleep. This is just meditation.
12. Somewhat stubborn
Pokemon can be stubborn about anything like food, battle, interests.
They have a strong will and point of view.
My cat, Jericho, can be so stubborn.
He burned his paw pads twice on our electric stove, and he still jumps up there.
But he remembers how to walk on a harness and leash.
I guess cats just do what they want, right?
13. Likes to run
Pokemon that like to run show off their speed to others. They enjoy running.
Cats are big runners when they get the zoomies.
Again, Jericho is a zoomies guy. He gets the zoomies all the time. Not only after he eats.
Usually, he gets excited and energetic when we come home.
He’ll scratch on his post and then zip around across the room and up onto the counters.
14. Alert to sounds
Pokemon with this speed characteristic have a strong sense of hearing.
Cats have a wonderful sense of hearing.
They can hear 1.6 octaves above the range of a human and even 1 octave above the range of a dog.
Jericho is very alert to sounds. If he hears something in the hallway he runs toward it.
He also runs to the door when someone rings the bell and knocks.
Jericho perks up from napping seconds before my partner comes home. He hears him before I do.
15. Somewhat of a clown
These Pokemon use tricks and pranks to entertain people. They are silly and don’t like to take responsibility.
Cats are luxurious creatures, but they are also clumsy.
Jericho is quite the clown. He does a lot of silly stuff that makes me laugh.
Sometimes he misses jumps, falls off the counter, or slides around when he runs.
After he falls, he licks himself to pretend it didn’t happen.
I’m sure your pets are fun too.
16. Quick to flee
Pokemon that are quick to flee get scared easily. They will run if they sense danger.
Jericho is curious about the hallway. We live in an apartment building so there’s a long hallway with apartment doors out there.
Woo, so exciting!
He’ll sneak out when we are coming and going. He walks up and down the hall with his tail sticking straight up like he owns the place.

One time Jericho snuck out while my partner was coming in. Someone else was in the hallway going to the trash room.
Jericho saw him and ran back inside so quickly.
17. Follows you around
Pokemon follow their trainers around.
Cats follow their humans around too.
Jericho follows me around everywhere I go.
We’ll be lying in bed together. Jericho is fast asleep.
I get up to use the bathroom, and a few seconds later he’s in there with me.
I go back to the bed, and a few seconds later he’s in there with me.
18. Protects you
Pokemon protect their trainers and go into battle for them.
I’m not sure how much protection Jericho provides.
However, I’ve also lived with many dogs. Most of them were all bark and no bite.
They never had to protect me from anything, but they are extremely loyal.
19. They are psychic
There are 114 Pokemon that have psychic abilities.
Animals are psychic too. They are much more intuitive than we are.
However, with meditation and mindfulness, we can strengthen our intuition.
Imagine how much psychic ability we’d have if we meditated as much as our cats.
Animals don’t have commonly spoken language so they use body language and energy to communicate and understand each other.
Do you know how your pet can tell when you had a bad day?
Well, it’s because they pick up on our emotions. They can read us energetically.
Even though Pokemon are cartoon and gaming characters, they are based on real animals.
Their appearance is mythical, but they are inspired by the real thing.
It’s interesting to see all of the characteristics match up too.
