When cats sleep with you they are showing you that they trust you.
Cats are most vulnerable while they sleep so this is a definite sign that they love you.
They also sleep with you because they love your warmth.
Even if cats do not sleep directly on you, sleeping near you or just in your presence means they love you and trust you.
I always explain the difference between cats and dogs this way…
Dogs work to earn our trust. But, with cats, we have to work to earn theirs.

Does my cat love me if she sleeps next to me?
Your cat does not need to sleep directly on you to show you she loves you.
Cats are most vulnerable while they sleep. And a sign of weakness in the wild makes for an easy target.
These instincts are ingrained. Even if your cat has never been outside.
If your cat sleeps next to you or in your presence, it means she trusts you.
Trust and comfortability with you are sure signs that she loves you.
Why does my cat sleep with me and not my husband?
Your cat may sleep with you and not your husband because your cat’s bond with you is stronger.
It doesn’t mean that your cat doesn’t love your husband. But some cats bond more strongly with some people than others.
It may also be because you move around less or you’re warmer.
My cat, Jericho, sleeps with me more than my partner, John.
I feed Jericho, keep the litter box clean, and spend much more time with him than John does. I’m also more experienced with cats. And they definitely sense that.
However, they have bonded more and more as the days go by. They bond even more whenever I visit my parents.
I also encourage John to spend time playing with Jericho. And that positive activity helps them bond more.
My cat follows me everywhere and sleeps with me
If your cat follows you everywhere and sleeps with you, he definitely loves you.
Cats, in general, are solitary animals. However, they can form a strong bond with their parents.
Your cat will follow you around because he likes to be with you.
He loves to be near you and cuddle with you while you sleep for extra warmth and bonding.
Jericho follows me everywhere and sleeps with me too. One of our routines is nap time together.
He waits for me to go to bed, and then he comes running.
Jericho settles in for a petting session, and then he falls asleep on me.
Should my cat sleep with me?
Letting your cat sleep with you is completely up to you. There are pros and cons to having your cat sleep with you.
You’ll have to decide which option is best for you.
Pros of letting your cat sleep with you:
- Extra snuggly warmth
- Great for bonding
- Cat’s purring heals you
I love that Jericho sleeps with me because he keeps me warm and cozy.
Letting your cat sleep with you will help strengthen your bond as well.
The cat’s purr heals himself, but it also heals you.
The frequencies of purrs can help strengthen bone density, heal inflammation and wounds, osteoarthritis, and post-operative pain.

Cons of letting your cat sleep with you:
- Allergies
- Cats take up the whole pillow
- May take you longer to fall asleep
If you’re allergic to your cat then sleeping together isn’t the best option.
Another con is that it may take you longer to fall asleep because cats take up a lot of room. They are small, but they love to stretch out while they sleep.
We have a king-size bed, and Jericho somehow manages to take up the whole bed.
Jericho also likes to sleep on my face, and he takes up the whole pillow within a few minutes.
Either way, you should provide some warm comfy cat beds.
Jericho sleeps with me every night, and he naps on my desk or lap while I work.
But he still has a couple of private beds to choose from.
Here are his favorite beds:
- Organic cotton bed on Etsy
- 2-in-1 cat bed on Amazon and Chewy
