This week I’m sharing my raw & whole prey cat food restock haul. Half of the freezer is for Jericho’s food, and I’ll show you how I plan and organize everything.

I’m on the carnivore diet too (mostly) so the other half of the freezer is for our meat.

We don’t eat any other frozen foods so this works well for us.

I like to haul a bunch of food at once when ordering online so that the cost of shipping is justified.

Right now Jericho is eating 50/50 whole prey and DIY raw. But I’m switching over to complete premade raw next.

This is just easier for my schedule right now and for feeding alongside whole prey.

There are so many more options available compared to when I first started feeding raw 7 years ago.

So I’d like to take advantage of the variety and wonderful options available. Especially since my schedule is busier now.

Whole prey cat food restock

I order Jericho’s whole prey from Cold Blooded Cafe. I love the variety of prey and sizes.

Jericho has had from Cold Blooded Cafe:

  • Large and jumbo mice
  • Small and pup rats
  • Jumbo African soft furred rats
  • Small and medium hamsters
  • Day old chicks
  • Extra small quail

I’ve tested a lot from them, and now I know what Jericho likes the best.

For this restock I ordered 5 packs of large mice, 2 packs of the 50 count day old chicks, and 1 pack of the extra small quail.

I wanted to order more quail, but there was only 1 available when I ordered.

They source birds from local Amish farms so they don’t have much control over stocking for these prey items.

The total count of prey in this restock is 250. I do still have some hamsters and ASF rats left over from the last order.

I’ll be feeding the hamsters once a week along with my restock order. But I’m giving the ASF rats to my friend who has a snake. They are a bit big for Jericho even when I cut them.

The total between what I have left over and from this restock should be just over 6 months’ worth of food.

But this is only half of Jericho’s diet. The other half is DIY ground raw with a little bit of commercially complete premade raw.

Raw cat food restock

Jericho also eats DIY ground raw with his main meals and commercially complete raw for hunting and clicker training.

I use Hare Today’s duck meat, bones, and organs chub for the DIY raw meals.

And Quest Cat Food nuggets for hunting and clicker training. Quest is complete and balanced already.

I still have 1 one pound chub left of Hare Today’s duck meat, bones, and organs. So I will use this up as I transition to the next restock I got.

The next restock I got was 6 pounds of Viva Raw. I got this for free since I work with them as an affiliate.

So I’m going to slowly introduce Viva Raw while using the last HT duck chub.

The 1 pound left of Hare Today plus 6 pounds from Viva will last about 7 weeks.

So I will have to restock his raw portion before I need another whole prey restock.

If you’d like to try out Viva Raw, you can get 20% off your first order with my code JESSCATICLES. Use this link and the code will apply automatically.

I love using Quest nuggets for hunting and clicker training because it’s so easy to grab a few nuggets to thaw vs thawing an entire pound of food. But I still have about 1/4 of a pound left so I didn’t need to restock this yet.

I buy Quest Cat Food at my local pet food store. But if you can’t find it locally, you can buy it online and get 25% off your first order with code JESSCATICLES.

Planning my next cat food restock

There was one restock where I had exactly enough of Hare Today duck and rabbit chubs and whole prey with nothing left over. It’s nice when it works out like that.

But sometimes things are sold out, and I have to change Jericho’s raw diet plan.

Plus I’m still figuring out how much of each food to order based on how much I’m feeding Jericho and what I’m feeding Jericho.

There are more variables with whole prey so it requires more attention. Every prey is slightly different in size and therefore the weight is different. So it can be more difficult to plan out.

But whole prey works better for us.

Jericho can’t chew raw meaty bones anymore because he had teeth extracted on one side. But I still want the teeth cleaning and mental stimulation benefits of chewing.

Thankfully, whole prey is softer so it’s easier for him to chew.

I also plan to switch from DIY raw to commercially complete raw for the other half of Jericho’s diet.

With DIY raw, I have to thaw and portion one pound at a time. This plus whole prey makes about 2 weeks’ worth of food. And these meal containers take up freezer space that I’d rather use for more whole prey.

I’d rather buy more whole prey online and then buy commercially complete raw locally. I can’t find whole prey locally so ordering prey online works better for me.

Another pro for commercially complete raw is that I’d buy patties and nuggets. So I can just portion 1-2 days at a time. No more meal prep! And that saves on freezer space too.

It’s all about figuring out what works for you, your freeze space, your budget, and your schedule.

What a great time to be alive that we have all of these raw and whole prey options!
