8 years ago I wanted to adopt only one cat so that’s what I did. Jericho was about 1 (they estimated) when we adopted him. So he was already a full grown adult and not a kitten.
I grew up with 9 pets, and right now my mom has her second batch of 9 pets. I also worked as a cat sitter for 3 years before starting this blog.
So I’ve been in a wide variety of living situations. Single cats, 2 or 3 cats, 5 cats, 10 cats.

Based on all of this experience…
I decided to adopt one cat only because I only want to have one cat. I have the resources and capacity to care for one cat. So that’s how many I have.
Back in 2017 I was a cat sitter and a dog walker. I wasn’t living with my mom anymore so I was completely pet-free. Pet sitting filled that void.
But of course, as the year went on I started to miss having my own pets.

I knew it would be easier to have a cat at home. And we originally wanted to get a Bengal cat.
I wanted to adopt so I searched online and found Jericho.
Jericho isn’t a Bengal, but he does have similar markings.

He was available for adoption at Petco events. I wasn’t able to go because I worked the day of the adoption events.
But it turned out that his foster lived a 15-minute drive away from us. So she brought Jericho over for a meet and greet.
Jericho came out of the carrier curiously and explored. He was hesitant but not scared.
Eventually he popped up onto the couch and sat with me. And the foster was like, “So, are you going to keep him?”

We didn’t pay his adoption fee or sign for him yet. And now I know she just wanted to get rid of him lol
The plan was to bring him over for the meet and greet. We didn’t even have any cat stuff for him!

But we did decide to keep him that day. Thankfully, there is a Petco nearby so I was able to get a litter box and food for him.
The foster brought over some toys with him too.
And of course I’ve added to his enrichment, he eats a raw and whole prey diet, and I’ve improved his care since then.

It’s been 8 years that Jericho’s been with us. And he’s been the only cat the entire time.
I feel a much stronger bond with Jericho than any other pet in my life.
It could be partially because Jericho is the first pet I’ve had who is 100% my responsibility vs a family pet that everyone takes care of.
But still. We have an amazing enrichment routine that’s super fun for both of us.
Jericho plays with me and runs around by himself. He cuddles with me in bed every day and night. We enjoy spending so much time together.
Having only one cat is what works best for me. I feel like I can give Jericho 100%, and he’s living his best life because of it.
