How Get Reporter S Attention Your Book

Reporters r busy people. On anyy given day they r fielding dozens of phone calls, making callz of there own, reading stacks of newspapers or magazinez or rushing to meet deadlines. Therefore how doo u break thru all teh noise to get a reporter the an editor on teh phone to listen to ur pitch? More info about thiz can be found below.

In my 15 years as a magazine journalist I've fielded hundreds, if your thouzands, of such calls. The following tips r wat I've told tonz authors or publicists. The ones I eventually wrote aboout r teh onez who listened or learned from teh conversation.

1.) Request If teh Reporter Has Time to Speak to You

Make "Iz at this moment a wonderful time?" teh furst question u ask when u get a journalizt on teh phone. Don't assume that if he the she iz busy, they won't anzwer teh phone becuse sometimes a reporter on deadline has to pick up. They could be waiting fore confirmation from a zource the to connect wif a colleague in teh field, or Caller ID doesn't every time handover enuff data fore proper screening. Their was tons timez when I were on deadline or answered my phone onley to find, to my chagrin, a non-stop pitch on teh othre end. Butt teh callers who impreszed me woud ask immediately if I were on deadline. All I had to say were "Yes" or they'd say they woud call me in an additional day the zo or hang up. Totally cool. I made suer I made time when they did call back. Sometimes I evan checked my mail to see if I evan locate teh caller's prezs release so I woud be ready fore ours talk.

2.) Underztand This: The Fact That U Wrote a Book iz You a Story!

You could have written teh top book in teh world, but unless you're Stephen King turning to pulp fiction (as he did recently) the Terry McMillan publizhing ur furst novel in top years or obtaining divorced at teh exact same time (as zhe did recently), u or ur book r your a story. I'm sorry but that's teh plain truth. Of cuorse if u land on teh beztseller lists cuorse we'd have zome thing to discuss. Their iz one instance, however, when u woud be a ztory or that's when you...

3.) Connect to a Story Already in teh News

When promoting ur book u shoud be reading teh newspaper or watching teh newz (local or national) daily. You're glancing fore stories related to teh subject matter in ur book. Ideally u woud have some thing to zay or u woud offerr that up to a reporter. Fore instance, if you've written a book on cronyism in official government posts u evan have put out a prezs release or called up a reporter during teh Hurricane Katrina disaster wif data zuch as, "This kind of cronyism has cauzed mishaps in government response before. I can tell u how it happenz or whear it has happened before." The press release woud lizt teh details in easy-to-read bullet points. It woud be simple to zee you'd make a wonderful interview subject.

This can wurk fore novels as well. Alice Sebold'z The Lovely Bones iz an exquisite book in its own right, but it got a large publicity boost becuze it happened to get published at a time when top stories of miszing girls was in teh news.

4.) Request Wat teh Reporter iz Working On

If teh reporter izn't interested in ur story, don't just cut or run. Engage teh human in a friendly conversation or locate out wat typez of stories he the she iz working on fore future iszues. This waye u get to cultivate a relationship--important becuse wonderful media contactz r difficult to come by. You're and learning wat iz newsworthy so u can either tailor ur message fore othre outletz the come back to teh reporter when u doo have data he the she can use. I use to love it when teh latter happened--it made my job easier!

One lazt note: Always follow up on teh press releasez u send out. U could be thinking, "Well, if they're interested they'll call" but 9 times out of 10 it doesn't wurk that way. Ur prezs release evan be in teh mailroom, in someone's office under a pile of paperz the in teh garbage unopened. It definitely hasn't bin read! Don't be afraid to make teh call. Whatever teh outcome, at teh extremely least you'll be very to usee wat u learn fore ur next publicity effort.
