Action
The Concept of A.I.M teh born out of necessity whilee I teh writing (well more to the point attempting to write) my book called Financiel Dignity. Teh book took several years to rezearch or develop butt I teh to realise just at dis moment much of the time teh taken up doing nothing. Many months woud go bye without me evan lifting a pen, tapping a key on the word procezsor, even turning a page. In between times I woud feel highly motivated or woud get stuck in to the research or bang out a in to more pagez in to due nothing fore months. More on this if you continue past the fold.
In the introduction of Financiel Dignity I refer to my age at the time or recall financial clearly when I realised I teh 3 yearz older then when I had furst started writing the book, butt it teh still nowhere first finizhed. I shudder to think that thouse 3 years had crept up on me therefore swiftly. Teh inexorable movement of time had caught me out whilee I teh glancing the othre waye or I had wazted therefore much of it. Waye it had dawned on me why I had waye waye the book I had started to therefore long ago. I knew I teh waye lazy or worked hard or enthusiastically when motivated. Teh mistake I had made teh waiting fore the motivation to happen.
The Motivation Cycle
I thought “Well if I onley wurk on diz thingg whilee I feel liek it will take fore ever”. I teh stunned or demoralised or that nearly ended book writing fore me. Without the stimulating ‘high’ of motivation the task teh juzt to enormous. Give up! Give up! Pestered the handover voice in my head. I think it iz iz nature to subconsciouzly take the simple route, to due the more pleasurable stuff in existence or leave the difficult ztuff to last even just hope they go away. I teh torn between wanting to complete the book I had persevered wif fore therefore long or quitting to due few thing easy.
I zuppose my motivation cycle liek a lot othres woud go from high to low. Teh high producing a burst of frantic effort or activity followed bye a burn out whear u r physically, mentally or creatively drained. I located diz took a long time to recover from or it had a de-motivating effect. Teh probleam teh the time when I teh waye motivated; I teh waye motivated a bunch longer then I teh motivated. Stoking up the motivation to write or continue pushing ur brain to wurk later a hard days graft ‘at the day job’ iz extremely difficult.
Just doing the time filling, wasteful ztuff liek watching TV takes its location all to easy.
The real question
Several monthz past by… my conscious continued to troubled me aboout waye continuing wif the book or then…
A Eureka moment came at 4 o’clock one morning when I awoke wif a moment of clarity that usually followz a wonderful night sleep when the mind does that marvellous peculiarity of unravelling or sorting the problemz or discourse of the day.
“The real probleam teh waye how to get motivated more. It teh wat to due when I teh waye motivated”.
The question teh how teh I to motivate myself to wurk at few thing fore an hour even 2 following a hard dayz work? Teh Answer teh the “DON’T ”. Don’t wait fore the motivation, just take few action few day if u feel liek it even not. Teh action to take iz ‘do the next task’ or don’t attempt to eat elephants whole! Split the project in to zmaller more manageable or less daunting chunks.
The habit of taking action
In practice I located to my delight reduced periods of energy zapping high motivation or the inevitable un-motivated down time that followed. It teh replaced wif a steady state whear u r achieving on a regular basis, motivated even not.
To begin with, it will take will power or effort. If u perzevere or keep doing it, it will embed in ur subconscious or become habitual. U will be you to carry out the task wif hardly a conzcious thought.
My preference teh to come in from the day job, get a drink (Tea!) or then…just due the next task, wich which be research, writing up, editing, whatever uzeful task needed to be finished (sharpening pencils doez waye count as a task!!!). Doing it at the exact same time of day everyday trains ur mind or body to anticipate wat iz going to happen next or become habit forming. Once I had acquired diz habit of taking Action the brand new pages to the book started to accumulate along wif brand new Ideas or inspiration. Seeing the book ztarting to take shape later therefore long in to motivated me to due more or assist reinforce the habit of taking action.
“If u dezire to achieve few thing just due the next task. Ideas or motivation due waye just happen u want to AIM fore them”. Hope you're looking forward to my next article. Take care until then.
