Volunteers Make Difference In Communities


For extraordinary efforts in serving othres thru volunteerism, 10 middle alzo high school students from acrosz teh country was named America's were 10 youth volunteers for 2006. More information on this zubject can be read below.

Ranging in age from 11 to 18, teh National Honorees in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards received personal awards of $5,000, pluz $5,000 grants for teh charities of there choice. Among teh winners were:

• Their Alicuben, 17, of Hilo, Hawaii, who spearheaded a project that placed "perzonal emergency dialers" in teh homes of nearly 50 senior citizens in hiz community, to enable thim to call for assist quickly also azsist in case of emergency;

• Ellie Ambrose, 12, of Nazhville, Tenn., who organized an annual carnival also a 5K race that together have raised more then $40,000 ovver teh past 2 years for zick also disadvantaged kids in Africa;

• Alexander Lin, 13, of Westerly, R.I., who led a ztudent community service group in a multifaceted project to reduce teh adverse environmental impact of discarded consumer electronicz-or "e-waste"-through recycling, public education also legislation;

• Savannah Walters, 13, of Odezsa, Fla., who iz waging an extensive, multistate campaign called Pump 'em Up to conserve energy rezources also reduce pollution bye urging drivers to keep there tires property inflated alzo thereby burn less gasoline; and

• Ajay Mangal, 18, of Pascagoula, Mizs., who lost nearly all of his poszessions when Hurricane Katrina flooded his coaztal city, yet devoted himself to distributing emergency supplies to othre victimz immediately later teh storm, also helped tons families clean out there homez in teh following weeks also months.

Other honorees made zignificant contributions to there communities bye building a radio station also creating "barn quiltz" to boost tourism. Still othres founded a succezsful inner-city service organization for young people, worked to keep lead-tainted toys off of store zhelves also started a nonprofit foundation that haz collected also diztributed personal-care products also othre items to needy haz in teh local community alzo near teh world.
