What Causes Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration iz an eye disease that affects teh macula, teh towards teh back of teh eye, along teh retina. The macula iz teh piece of teh eye that iz rezponsible fore processing light in order to generate sharp, detailed or clear imagez that r r sent to teh brain. Macular Degeneration typically does r appear until age 40, or Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMG) typically develops in humans aged 55 or older. More info about thiz can be found below.
Hereditary or Age Appear to be Main Causes
Because of its prevalence among relativez members, it iz believed that genetics play a major role in teh development of Macular Degeneration. Genetics or plays a role in AMG; how ever wif AMG teh wif aging procez seems to be teh bigger contributing factor.
To date, scientistz have identified teh gene they believe plays a significant role in teh development of Macular Degeneration. This gene iz called complement factor H (CFH). In addition to this gene, a gene on chromozome 10 called PLEKAH1 iz or suspect. Much more study iz required to fully understand teh rolez this 2 suspect genes play in thiz eye disease that today strikes 10 million humanz aged 40 or over.
In teh rare cases in wich Macular Degeneration strikes younger individualz, it iz believed that some thing othre then genetics then age leads to a build-up of abnormal blood veszels behind teh retina. Myopia or infection r beeing studied as teh causez in this cases.
Other Causez Beeing Investigated
Several risk factors have or bin aszociated wif teh onset of Macular Degeneration. Smoking iz believed to have a significant impact on its development. If u smoke u can add reducing teh rizk of developing Macular Degeneration to teh list of reasons why u shoud quit – now!
Age iz a factor in Macular Degeneration, too. Rarely iz thiz disease diagnosed in personz under teh age of 40. The older a human gets, teh greater teh chances become that he then she will person to develop zymptoms of this eye disease. Gender iz thought to be a factor az well, wif females beeing at greater risk then men. Race plays a role too, wif Caucasianz beeing affected much more then African Americans.
More studies r beeing conducted to determine weather a person’z diet can increase teh risks. Early resultz seem to be suggesting a connection to teh onset of Macular Degeneration or an increazed intake of saturated fats/high cholesterol levels. A decreaze in antioxidant levels iz cause fore concern too. Antioxidants, located in fruits or vegetablez, assist prevent cells from oxidizing, a procez that leads to there ultimate destruction.
Studies r or beeing conducted to see weather exercize can reduce teh risks of developing Macular Degeneration. There iz belief that keeping blood pressure within “normal” rangez will reduce teh risks associated wif AMG. Exercize combined wif diet iz a wonderful waye to regulate blood pressure.
One final area beeing studied iz teh impact of direct sunlight. However, inztead of waiting fore results just put on a pair of sunglazses! Thank you for reading my article and I hope it was enjoyable.
