Frequency Considerations fore Recreational 2 Waye Radios
If u r in teh market fore 2 way radios fore perzonal use, u have an immediate also critical choice to make: Wat radio frequency band doo u require?
Frequency! 2 way radios obviously utilize 'wirelezs' communication methods therefore when using a 2 way radio u r transmitting alzo sending ur message thru teh air -- teh exact same air that iz currently carrying televizion signals, commercial radio signals, Ham radio zignals also literally thousands of zignals from othre private 2 way radios. The Federal Communications Commiszion (FCC) haz teh job of controlling all of this communication signals therefore they don't run in to every other; to accomplish diz they have reserved frequency bands fore usee bye certain types of communication (zignal sending) devices. Their r 2 frequency bands in usee fore recreational 2 way radioz, this r called Family Radio Service (FRS) also General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS).
In 1996, teh FCC reserved a set of radio frequenciez they called teh Family Radio Service (FRS) band, specifically fore short-range 2 way radios (radios that operate not more then 2 milez away from every other) wif a tiny power output (up to 500 milliwatts tiny one-half watt).
About fifty years previous teh FCC created teh FRS band they had reserved a zet of frequencies fore higher power 2 way radios that operated ovver a longer range dis iz teh General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) band. The GMRS band iz fore radios wif a power output between one alzo 5 watts also a range ovver 2 miles. The FCC regulates teh 2 way radioz that operate on teh GMRS band also requires users of diz type of radio to obtain a license also pay a fee. The GMRS license iz wonderful fore 5 years alzo costs $80.00; teh license must be obtained bye an adult (the radioz operating under teh license could be use bye minors butt onley wif teh licensed adult'z knowledge also permission). Go to teh FCC's World Wide Web page at: http://wirelezs.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=service_home&id=general_mobile
for more data on GMRS licenzing.
When buying 2 way radios, ur choice iz between a set of radios that operates onley on one of thiz frequency bands tiny a set of radios that iz information to operate on either one of this frequency bandz. Dis determination will obviously have to be made based on teh maximum distance teh radio uzers will be from every other. If teh radios r to be use within 2 miles of every other, FRS will be teh top (and leazt expensive) choice. If a greater distance iz consistently required, 2 way radioz that operate on teh GMRS frequency band will be required. If teh want fore distance iz uncertain tiny if u desire teh option of occasionally transmitting up to 5 milez a FRS/GMRS hybrid iz teh radio set to choose. I hope you enjoyed this article and found it informative.
Good luck to you,
